McMillan Castle Background

Muka Mukuu Farmers Co-op Society Ltd  bought the property from the McMillan’s and owns it to date. To date a large part of the farm has been subdivided to the organizations members. What remains as group property including the house is being managed by a management committee on behalf of the members.

The committee’s current interest is to protect the house and property from continued vandalism and mismanagement and generate income for members. They readily embraced the idea of gazettement and development of this property into a heritage and learning resource centre when it was first introduced to them by the University of Nairobi. Other Stakeholders

There are different stakeholders with various interests on the Mc Millan House and the property around it;

The University of Nairobi (UoN)

According to UoN’s Kibe Kiraigu, UoN was instrumental in lobbying for the gazettement of the house as a national monument. In the recent past, the UoN has written to the town clerk of Nairobi City Council exploring on the possibility of having some furniture and other materials brought back to the house from the Mc Millan Library in Nairobi where they are found today.

Other efforts to restore the McMillan house to its former glory would be the collection of Mc Millan documents and items including a gate from their current locations.

UoN also has the idea having its Astrology Department full with an observatory, catering and accommodation facilities for resident local and international/visiting students.

National Museums of Kenya

The National Museums of Kenya facilitated the gazettement of the house as a National monument in 2007.

Investors in Tourism

According to Mr. Mwangi, there are plans to attract investors in the tourism industry to invest in this region. In particular he talked of investors that are interested in installing a cable car to would operate from near the house to the top of the Donyo Sabuk Mountain where the Mc Millans were laid to rest. This would ride over the Donyo Sabuk National Reserve.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)

During a courtesy call to Donyo Sabuk National Park, the warden in charge Mr. Josephat Wambua expressed his organization’s interest in the development of the area’s heritage potential as well as associated development such as the cable car project as it would open the park to a wider range of visitors.
