Korogocho is a sprawling slum, with over 2 million people living in an area of 2 square kilometres. It has a myriad of problems : alcoholism, drug abuse, prostitution, and many diseases including waterborne diseases, malaria, HIV and Aids.

Korogocho slums do not have running water or electricity. A raw sewer runs down the street. People live in simple, crowded tin-roofed shacks. Children can’t afford to go to school, so spend time scavenging on the rubbish dump (Korogocho means rubbish dump, as it is the site of the main Nairobi dump).  Women are engaged in prostitution to earn a living as most of the women are single mothers and the children are half-orphans or orphans as a result of HIV/Aids. Men are illicit brewers, casual labourers at building sites, or selling charcoal by the roadside.  

 

Vision Peoples in Mission provides hope. A number of committed and professional Christians offer their skills to the project in the school, clinic, orphanage or vocational training programmes. The programme cannot afford to pay a proper salary, so they work for a small monthly allowance.  

To make a step towards becoming self-sufficient, VPM has managed to build an apartment block in Lucky Summer, about 1.5km away from Korogocho. Small apartments are rented out to give a sustainable income to the project.

We are all created in God's image and likeness, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.  Someone in Korogocho is crying for hepl. Jesus said, 'I came to you when I was hungry and you never gave me anything to eat, I came when I was thirsty and you never gave me something to drink". If you give something to these children, it's like you will be giving something to me, and you will be blessed (Mt 25:35)
